Noted position and weather conditions. Air defense drill exercised for FDR, demonstrating ship's firepower. During the drill, unexpected explosion occured in vicinity of the USS Iowa. Discovered to be a torpedo accidentally fired by the USS William D. Porter, the anti-submarine screen to starboard. Probably caused by moisture from rough seas. Investigation ordered by Adm. Ernest J. King. In afternoon, inspections of ship's medical department conducted. |
